TheoryArsenal Football Club moved into its new Emirates football stadium located in Islington, North London. On each matchday, as 60,000 fans descend on the stadium, the local transport infrastructure comes under strain and, consequently, upgrades were commissioned to Arsenal Tube Station in August 2006. Under the instruction of client and principal contractor, Tube Lines, Bailey Rail began work on a £1.6m contract.
Bailey Rail had to work under tight timescales on a complex project in a station which remained fully operational throughout. This was the first complete in-house design and build project by Tube Lines, and so a close working partnership was fundamental to the success of the contract.
Bailey Rail set about the task by installing new and upgraded M&E services throughout the station, including the power supplies, lighting, communication cabling and a multi-CMS. A section of roof over the gate line in the ticket hall was replaced, along with a new canopy for the control room. Although some mechanical service upgrades took place in locations away from passenger flow, the vast majority of work – such as the ticket hall, passageways and platforms – was carried out in public areas. It was important to avoid any passenger or service disruption, but inevitably this meant a disruptive working environment for the team.
Despite the difficult working environment and challenging timescales, in less than 10 months Bailey Rail has taken an immensely difficult project and delivered on its promises.

It ensured match days passed off without unnecessary inconvenience, and considerable efforts were made to minimise local residents’ exposure to noise, both on and off-site. Station users now benefit from the added safety and security of new lighting, a state-of-art public address system, cameras and help points. After 100 years in service, Arsenal Tube Station is fit for the modern era and ready for a new generation of Arsenal fans passing through its turnstiles.
